The Commando Memorial Spean Bridge Lochaber, Scottish Highlands Scotiana

Ever since its unveiling (see photo below) in 1952 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother serving Commandos and veterans gather at the Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge on Remembrance Sunday. A simple service of remembrance preceeded by a short march up the hill, where they are joined by their families and friends, as well as local people.

The commando memorial stands on the west side of the A82. It is just to the northwest of the small village of Spean Bridge. The largest settlement is Fort William to the south west. From Inverness, travel south along the A82 on the west side of Loch Ness. Stop off at Laggan Locks for a break if you need it.

The Commando Monument just north of Spean Bridge is a large three-figure bronze statue commemorating the service and sacrifice given by thousands of Allied troops during the Second World War.

The Memorial at Spean Bridge was unveiled by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on Saturday 27th September 1952. There was no parade or ceremonial drill. The Queen Mother expressing a wish to walk through a line of Commandos on the way back to her car.

It is situated at the junction of the Gairlochy Road, and the main Inverness to Fort William, about three quarters of a mile from Spean bridge, at the top of the hill. During World War II Allied soldiers came to Spean Bridge for Commando training, which was part of Churchill's strategy to fight the Nazis all over Europe. British Commandos, United States Army Rangers and soldiers from Canada, France, Netherlands, Czechoslovakia, Poland and Belgium trained there.

The main A82 departs Spean Bridge in the direction of Inverness by first climbing up the side of Glen Spean. As the road leaves the glen it turns to head north, and as it does so, it passes the Commando Memorial on the left. Access to the car park is a short distance along the B8004.
